Vol 19 A Bone Scan: Diagnosing Calciphylaxis
A 79-year-old female patient with bilateral painful skin lesions in the lower limbs, queried for calciphylaxis. The bone scan results indicate positive findings for calciphylaxis primarily involving the lower legs, with a metabolic SuperScan pattern. Calciphylaxis, or calcific uremic arteriolopathy, is a rare and often fatal condition commonly associated with end-stage renal disease.

A 40-year-old male patient with recently diagnosed prostate adenocarcinoma, Gleason’s grade (4+3) = 7, with PSA level of 28.7 ug/L. The patient has a history of relapsing T-cell lymphoma treated with multiple lines of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant 5-7 years ago. Following this, he developed graft-versus-host disease affecting the skin and lungs, which was treated with long-term steroids. Moreover, he has recurrent venous thromboembolism managed with anticoagulants.
