Canada’s Nuclear Medicine Technologist Workforce Crisis

Based on a decade of national workforce data, provincial and territorial comparisons, training capacity assessments, and service-level impacts, CANM’s 2025 National White Paper confirms that the shortage of Nuclear Medicine Technologists (NMTs) is no longer a localized or temporary issue. It now represents a system-level risk with direct consequences for clinical capacity, service sustainability, and patient outcomes across Canada.

As demand for PET, SPECT, radiopharmaceutical therapies, and theranostics continues to grow, many regions are operating below sustainable staffing levels. Without coordinated national action, the gap between technological advancement and workforce capacity will continue to widen.
